Barry Moser

Film Odysseys is currently filming extensive interviews with the internationally renowned artist, Barry Moser. Moser is best known for his intricate wood engravings that illustrate an enormous range of classics including The Holy Bible, Dante’s Divine Comedy, The Odyssey of Homer, Dracula, Moby Dick, Frankenstein, The Wizard of Oz, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Robber Bridegroom, and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which won the National Book Award for design. He has also illustrated a plethora of children’s books and the words of poets such as Donald Hall and Richard Wilbur. Beyond his skills on paper and the woodblock, he is also a respected teacher, dedicated bookwright and gifted writer.

The film, as yet untitled, will focus on Moser’s visual works and his teaching, and it will offer a chance to view a wide array of his dazzling artwork as it is explored by the camera with Moser providing explanation, anecdotes and insights into his philosophy of life and making art. As in our documentary about Richard Wilbur, a prime objective of the film is to understand the influences and techniques that a master artist works with to produce work that often leaves viewers speechless.
